Made of neoprene/mesh with suede/nubuck overlays, expect an Adidas lifestyle footwear like the Adidas I-5923 to give your foot freedom of movement and sufficient support. Aside from the retro-inspired design, the Ortholite sockliner is also another notable feature of the sneaker as it makes a comfortable internal environment once the wearer steps on the Adidas I-5923 shoes.

Although constructed to fit true to size, some may find the I-5923 from Adidas to be a bit wide-fitting or roomy due to its stretchy upper. For a snug fit, sizing down is an option.

Those with the knack for retro runners would want the Adidas Originals I-5923 in their closet. Just like the Gazelle and the Dragon, the low-top Adidas I-5923 sneakers keep its ancestor’s classic look with the serrated Three-Stripes, neoprene/mesh upper and suede/nubuck overlays. The stripes, though, now made of TPU, its deconstructed heel cap and the full-length Boost midsole give this sneaker a modern flair and superior cushioning.

With retro running silhouettes gaining popularity in recent years, the Adidas I-5923 sneakers are bound for more collaborations and style makeovers in the next few years. The vintage 1970s runner look is natural to pull off with favorite colorways that include the Adidas I-5923 in red, black, white, and green colorways.

Similar to your fave Adidas Originals classics, this running shoe-inspired Adidas I-5923 sneaker’s subtle detailing blends with a variety of outfits. These include straight-cut jeans, cuffed joggers, and shorts as well as leggings and t-shirt dresses.

Here are some detailed styling tips to rock your Adidas I-5923 sneakers in style:

  • For Men. The men’s Adidas I-5923 sneaker is best paired with ankle, cropped, and rolled-up jeans. The low-top shoe also works well with joggers and slim-fit chinos. As for shorts, relaxed-fit, tapered walking shorts and Bermuda shorts are the best options for the Adidas I-5923. Top your vintage-inspired garb with a hoodie, a button-down casual shirt, or a plain or graphic-laden T-shirt. With the vast assortment of colorways for the I-5923, it is not a difficult task to style your retro runners.
  • For Women. The women’s Adidas I-5923 shoes can be worn with skinny jeans or leggings. Cropped skinny jeans or tattered slim jeans are also applicable to the I-5923 if a casual and vintage street-style look is what you want to achieve with your look. Top the retro runner with a relaxed-fit tee or a sexy tank top for that athleisure vibe meets vintage runner getup.

The leather heel tab and serrated Three-Stripes often clad in contrasting colors give this shoe its retro vibe. However, it is the deconstructed heel cap which offers additional support, the Boost midsole for lasting comfort and ultra-responsive cushioning and the I-5923 logo in gold for aesthetics that make this model unique.

Boost midsole technology has been around for several years, but its use seems to be all the more relevant today. The Boost foam material in the Adidas I-5923 shoes combines soft and responsive cushioning promising the highest energy return in the running industry to date. The bouncy feel and the superior cushioning also are among its many features as provided by energy capsules that can be seen in the midsole which efficiently store and release energy making runners feel the moment they get their feet on with a Boost-cushioned kick.

The Boost midsole material is the product of many years of research by Adidas’ partner BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, which created the solid granular material made of TPU or thermoplastic polyurethane that is blown up and turned into small energy capsules fused to form the full-length midsole in the Adidas I-5923.

Aside from the retro-inspired design, the Ortholite sockliner is also another notable feature of the sneaker as it makes a comfortable internal environment once the wearer steps on the Adidas I-5923 shoes.

Sixty-five years and counting, and this legendary German sneaker-producing brand continues to keep their patrons up to their toes with the re-release of their Adidas Originals classics and the introduction of their recently developed creations. Among their new releases is the low-top Adidas I-5923.

This lifestyle sneaker was first seen in November 2016. Introduced as the Iniki, it flaunted an upper that resembled the Adidas Gazelle. The addition of a heel-to-toe Boost midsole, though, gave its old-school silhouette a contemporary vibe. It also supplied comfort not seen on most classic models.

The Adidas Originals Iniki was released on the market in January 2017. However, in November the same year, the brand announced updating its name to I-5923. The new name was drawn from an archived 70s runner called the Mercury with a shelf number F-5923. Rumors, though, stated that the brand was forced to drop its original name due to a lawsuit filed against them.

The modification of the name, apparently, resulted in the “Iniki” wordmark being replaced with the “I-5923” callout. Other than that slight alteration, its silhouette remains unchanged. And just like its first edition, the Adidas I-5923 shoe keeps its fans happy with its retro styling, its responsive cushioning, not to mention it myriad of colorways.

  Collaborations and special colorways

The perfect combination of classic and modern aesthetics has renewed interests in the Iniki or the I-5923 silhouette. One brand that has shown a massive investment in the profile is the Japanese streetwear label Neighborhood. The Adidas s x Neighborhood collection featured the I-5923 runner, the Adidas NMD R1, Adidas Gazelle Super, and the new silhouette called the Adidas Chop Shop.

Dropped on February 24, 2018, the shoes came out together with track pants and jackets bearing the same design aesthetics. The shoes were all in black uppers as inspired by the motorcycle-riding street-style Neighborhood brand’s design standards of the Tokyo-based fashion retailer.

The Adidas Neighborhood I-5923 for the Spring/Summer 2018 look featured an all-black design had minimal use of Neighborhood logos with some details placed on the iconic Three-stripes, the Adidas logo, and at the heel. The low-top collaborative model is a Core Black/ Footwear White colorway that instantly works well with Neighborhood apparel.

The Adidas Neighborhood I-5923’s adaptive Primeknit with texturized effect and suede overlays at the front mudguard, back heel, and Three-stripes had a printed collaborative branding in one of the stripes. Keeping the Neighborhood design on point is the "NBHD" print on the left heel patch and “BRGD" print on right heel patch.

After impressing sneakerheads with their collaboration in the first quarter of 2018, the Tokyo-based streetwear brand released as part of the Fall/Winter 2018 collection its rework on the Adidas I-5923 sneaker together with the Adidas Stan Smith and Adidas Kamanda models.

The Fall/Winter 2018 look of the Adidas I-5923 shoes, involved a military-inspired Olive colorway. Released on September 1, 2018, the Adidas I-5923 in military olive colorway had tonal graphics created by Los Angeles based artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt which pairs impeccably well with the track pants and jackets released with the collection. Details of the shoe design include a smooth suede and premium leather overlays, serrated Three-stripes on the medial and lateral sides with the latter having an I-5923 print on one of the stripes.

A breathable knit mesh material is used in some parts of the shoe like the toe box in a sock-like construction at the collar with a one-piece cleatie design. An Adidas x Neighborhood “NBHD” logo with Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s name is also printed on the tongue’s branding label.

The Adidas I-5923 sneakers have also been reworked with an LGBT-friendly design called the Adidas I-5923 Pride. Released in time for the Pride Month in June, the brand dropped its #BeTrue collection featuring reworked versions of the Adidas Deerupt, Adidas Campus, Adidas Pureboost, and the Adidas I-5923.

The collection was launched with a message of inclusiveness, togetherness, and tolerance with pride-inspired aesthetics of bright summer-ready hues and off-white base color. The Adidas I-5923 Pride came out in a smooth cream color as a base with pastel colors hits all over the upper. The design aims to honor gender diversity and respect while staying stylish and trendy.

  Adidas I-5923 vs. Adidas N-5923

A cheaper alternative to the Adidas I-5923 was also released around the same time. Only called the Adidas N-5923, the shoe is priced as much as 50 percent lower than the Adidas I-5923. The design aesthetics has remained to be from the 1970s inspired Iniki Runner. The upper is comprised of a synthetic material with a shiny tongue and serrated three-stripe logo.

The main difference between the Adidas I-5923 and the Adidas N-5923 is the Boost midsole. While the Adidas N-5923 brags itself as an everyday running shoe, its materials particularly its EVA cushioning in the midsole are less superior compared to the Adidas I-5923. The Adidas I-5923 sneakers are equipped with the latest Boost technology with a rubber gum outsole for a retro runner vibe.

The Adidas N-5923, on the other hand, only featured synthetic materials compared to the premium suede and nubuck used in the Adidas I-5923. Both shoes had TPU heel inserts for added support.

  • Slipping on/off becomes more accessible with the help of the hidden sock construction.
  • The tongue is attached to give the shoe its cleatie-like fit.
  • Comfort is enhanced thanks to the breathable mesh lining, Ortholite sockliner, and lightly padded collar and tongue.
  • Rubber outsole supplies sufficient traction.
  • Its lace-up closure with flat laces can be adjusted for a tighter fit.
  • “Trefoil” logo is displayed on the mesh tongue and heel for branding.
