For the longest time, no shoes by Under Armour can compete with other shoe brands. Whether it was a lack of traction, cushion, durability or even style options, they always seemed to nearly miss.
The Under Armour Heat Seeker has caught up to the standards of many basketballs shoes that I know and love. This shoe is light yet durable; has traction and feels good to play in. The Under Armour Heat Seeker is a shoe that I hope starts a new era of Under Armour basketball shoes.
Traction
I've played in a few pairs of the Under Armour basketball shoes and these are definitely an improvement. Traction is merely average. It is not cut and dry as shoes that I wear on a regular basis. I will say that I have complete confidence in playing with these shoes.
I played in this pair in the Jr. NBA World Championship in August 2018. I have had an occasional extra slide but, not excessive. I’m extremely picky about the traction of shoes I hoop in and the UA Heat Seeker does get the job done.
The soles are a more solid rubber composition compared to some Nike soles that kind of flex when you run your fingers across it. If Under Armour can take this and build on it, their shoe lines will attract a lot of attention.
Fit
These shoes feel a lot like newer releases from other brands, with a weave type fabric that stretches, almost providing that sock feeling.
I can compare it to most of the newer styles composed of a weave/knit. I also like that the heel has extra support which is noticeable when landing, essentially keeping my foot locked tight. Not bad UA!
Weight
This is a lighter shoe than it looks like. It almost feels like a low shoe, but I think it is considered a 'mid'.
The best feeling is taking off running and not having any sense of your shoes being on your feet. I've worn UA shoes that felt kind of boxy, but these again are a vast improvement.
Materials
One of my biggest hang-ups with Under Armour shoes has always been the durability. This shoe has a transition in the middle of the forefoot from rubber to the weaved fabric. I am guessing this strategic placement is to save the big toe from grinding and wearing on the toe area where previous UA shoes have failed.
The look of the shoe with the mix of materials does mesh pretty decently. So far the eyelets for the shoe strings are holding up and there is minimal visible wear.
Depending on how often you train, hoop or play, you really want a shoe to last and not have excessive signs of wear. This is one of the first UA shoes that passes that test!
Cushion
Under Armour Heat Seeker's cushion is good.
When you first put your foot in the shoe, it sinks just a little and then you are set in. For those not familiar with Under Armour Micro G foam, this material has trend setting benefits to any shoe it is constructed into.
It is thinner than some of the other brands of foam used for the cushion which allows your foot to be closer to the ground. And as I described before it lets your foot ‘settle’ in and then it’s somewhat firm. When I really want to get after it, flying around and jumping around, they are really comfortable.
Support
Even though this shoe is classified as a mid, the sock around the ankle makes it feel like a low which I like. The heel is supported and the ankle is very flexible. It is not a bad design at all.
The extra coupling of material around the back of the heel, for the most part, keeps it from rolling. I can play fast in this shoe and along with the weight, the flexibility around the ankle makes it nice to play in.
Things are looking up for UA with the addition of the Heat Seeker!
Under Armour basketball shoes are evolving and the Heat Seeker is at the threshold of a good shoe being great. There are a lot of similarities to some of my fave hoop shoes. While the Heat Seeker still misses with traction, this is still one of the top new UA shoes. I'm interested in seeing how UA further progresses this design.

The Under Armour Heat Seeker is close — this close — to being great. It needs HOVR, and we all know it. Under Armour will probably continue to hear “we need HOVR” until it appears on a ball shoe. The one thing missing was great cushioning, but even so, the Heat Seeker is still extremely good.

Keeping the good things from the Drive 4 and throwing in a few major upgrades, the Under Armour Heat Seeker is just simply a really solid & competitive performance model from UA.

The Under Armour Heatseeker is a mid-top basketball sneaker with a one-bootie construction. To provide a better fit and secure lockdown, a neoprene sock integrated with the shoe. It is where the shoelaces are attached.
Most reviewers mention that the Heatseeker has the same midsole setup as the Under Armour Drive 4. The shoe model is equipped with an EVA midsole and a Micro G foam at the heel for all-day comfort. To support multidirectional footwork with fast cuts and stops, the outsole features herringbone with thick grooves.
Under Armour has the HOVR Havoc as a great high-top option. The brand sheds light on the low-top alternative in the release of Stephen Curry’s sixth signature shoe.
Cushion. The responsiveness of the Under Armour Heatseeker comes from the full-length ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam carrier. For energy return, a strategically placed Micro G foam is found at the heel. This foam also protects the knees and muscles from stress and pain.
Traction. Thick and widely spread grooves compose the multidirectional herringbone traction pattern of the Under Armour Heatseeker. Herringbone is a go-to pattern for lateral and linear footwork and court control. The outsole has a thick rubber compound that can last more than a season of both indoor or outdoor games.
Length and Width. Shoe brands have standards to follow when it comes to the lengths and widths of the shoes that they manufacture. Sometimes, however, the design of the shoe modifies its measurements. Still, going true to size when buying is still the safest way to go.
Lockdown. The Under Armour Heatseeker has a sock-like fit. The side panels have thicker, and more rigid knit for foot containment. The inside of the shoe has a neoprene sock that anchors the shoelaces. It gives the shoe a more secure fit.
Under Armour makes stability a huge aspect of the Heatseeker. Upon landing, the extended midsole and solid midfoot shank keep the foot steady. The outrigger, the wide base, and the heel counter prevents the foot from going out of the footbed.
The mid-top silhouette of the Under Armour Heatseeker has a one-bootie construction. The engineered knit upper provides a comfortable and flexible fit. For breathability, the knit itself helps wick away moisture. The perforations in the forefoot area give more ventilation to the foot.
The Under Armour Heatseeker comes in different colorways, which will surely attract the eye. Depending on the wearer’s preference, the shoe can be worn with either long or short pants. It will look best with ankle socks to show off its cut and design.

Formation Blue/Jupiter Blue. The Formation Blue/Jupiter Blue colorway has a blue upper with a white outsole and Under Armour logo.
Flawless. Flawless is a red basketball shoe with a speckled white outsole.
Clay Green/Gunpowder Green. The Clay Green/Gunpowder Green colorway is a grey pair with a white outsole and a clay green heel counter.
Black/Metallic Iron. The Black/Metallic Iron colorway has a grey upper with a black TPU heel counter, black midsole, and a white outsole.
Anthracite/Tropical Tide. The Anthracite/Tropical Tide colorway is a grey pair with a toe cap leather overlay in pastel green with a shade of blue.
